High-Temperature Cyanide Leaching of Platium-Group Metals From Automobile Catalysts
Bureau of Mines 1992
Report of Investigations - RI 9428
Platinum and its sister metals are in high demand and found only in a few deposits around the world. The Auto industry relies heavily on them in the use of Catalytic converters for exhaust systems. Many people make a living recovering the metals from old automobile catalysts. Back in 1992 the US Bureau of mines did a study on how to recover these metals from old catalysts. In 1990 1.3 million ounces of Platinum, 230,000 ounces of palladium, and 330,000 ounces of Rhodium were used in the manufacture of Automobile catalysts. Multiply that times the last 18 years and all of the catalysts sitting in junkyards and it is a big number. Here is this very rare report!
